Master Scuba Diver & Training Assistant Dual Certification

Master Scuba Diver

Training Assistant

If you possess the desire to assist in the training of other divers, a NAUI Training Assistant specialty course might be for you. This course will qualify you in the skills and knowledge necessary to perform as a training assistant during NAUI diver training courses overseen by an active-status NAUI Instructor.

During training, students will engage in a minimum of eight open-water dives, including the following required dives:

  • Emergency procedures and rescue
  • Deep/simulated decompression diving
  • Limited visibility or night diving
  • Underwater navigation – search and recovery – light salvage


You may also choose from many different dives for your elective dives, such as:

  • Skin diving
  • Environmental study or survey
  • Air consumption (practical application)
  • Boat diving


The NAUI Master Scuba Diver course is for certified divers who desire additional training or orientation to a variety of diving sites and conditions. Divers must be a minimum of 15 years of age, in good health and must be previously certified as a NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver or equivalent.


If you possess the desire to assist in the training of other divers, a NAUI Training Assistant specialty course might be for you. This course will qualify you in the skills and knowledge necessary to perform as a training assistant during NAUI diver training courses overseen by an active-status NAUI Instructor. As a certified NAUI Training Assistant, you will be qualified to temporarily directly supervise students while an instructor conducts skills with other students; escort students on the surface or on underwater tours; and assist an active-status NAUI Instructor with other tasks, all under the direction of a NAUI Instructor.


As a NAUI Training Assistant, you will learn more about underwater navigation, communications, how to escort and assist divers during an open water training dives and how to assist with problem management during diver training evolutions. Minimum age for these courses is 18 years plus certification as a NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver or equivalent, NAUI Rescue Scuba Diver or equivalent and current certification in first aid and CPR. Assistant Instructor (AI)

As an Assistant Instructor, you will be authorized to teach all aspects of skin and scuba diving under the supervision of a Certified Instructor. This is the best possible way to develop your instructional skills.

The Assistant Instructor rating is a leadership-level certification. The program is designed to introduce students to diving instruction basics. It also tests individuals in fundamental water skills needed to be capable assistants. Certification authorizes individuals to assist active-status Instructors in the conduct of dive training. Assistant Instructor certification is a highly recommended step in the progression to Instructor.


  • A current Assistant Instructor is qualified to assist active-status Instructors in teaching skin and scuba diving during sanctioned diving courses provided the activities and locale are similar to those of the training. Additional training or experience is to be obtained by the Assistant Instructor who desires to assist in highly specialized training activities, such as deep, wreck penetration, cavern or ice dives.
  • An Assistant Instructor can be counted toward student-instructor ratios.
  • An active-status Assistant Instructor who completes a NAUI-DAN First Aid Instructor orientation, who has completed all required NAUI-DAN orientation modules and is using the NAUI-DAN training and support materials, may teach the NAUI-DAN First Aid programs.
  • After assisting an active-status Instructor with at least one complete Scuba Diver course, a current Assistant Instructor is qualified, if all other prerequisites are met, to enter a Divemaster Training Course (DMC) and/or Instructor Training Course (ITC).


Prerequisites for Entering the Course

  • Minimum age is 18 years by the water phase of the course.
  • Current certification in NAUI/DAN Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent.
  • Current certification in NAUI/DAN Rescue Scuba Diver or equivalent.
  • Current certification as a NAUI Nitrox Diver or the equivalent
  • Current certification as a NAUI Master Scuba Diver or the equivalent
  • Current certification in NAUI First Aid, CPR, & Oxygen Administration or the equivalent
  • A minimum of 50 logged open water scuba dives with a minimum of 25 hours bottom time. Dives shall be varied in environment, depth, and activities.
  • Medical Approval - Verification of good physical condition as documented by a medical examination and unconditional approval for diving by a licensed physician within the preceding 12 months.

  • Current certification as a NAUI Open Water Scuba Diver or the equivalent
  • Current certification as a NAUI Rescue Scuba Diver or the equivalent
  • Current certification as a NAUI Nitrox Diver or the equivalent
  • Current certification as a NAUI Master Scuba Diver or the equivalent
  • Current certification in NAUI First Aid for the Diving Professional or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 50 logged open water scuba dives with a minimum of 25 hours bottom time. Dives shall be varied in environment, depth, and activities.
