Ray received his first taste of scuba in the late 1960s. After witnessing diver training at an Indianapolis health club Ray decided to give the fledgling sport a shot. After a few nights of instruction Ray completed his first open water dive at an Indiana quarry.

Ray is the technical advisor to several Public Safety Dive Rescue/Recovery Dive Teams in the area including the Louisville Fire Department and Louisville Metro Police Department dive teams.
